The joint entrance examination (JEE) for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is likely to become history from 2013 as the central government Tuesday decided to work on a common entrance test for all government engineering colleges.
By 2013, we should have in place a common system for common admission into professional institutions in the country,’ Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said Tuesday after meeting at least 20 school education boards from across the country.
Explaining the situation, HRD ministry joint secretary S.C. Khuntia said: ‘We will work for a common entrance test for every stream. One examination for all engineering institutions, which means IITs will also follow it.’
‘In that parameter, there should not be any separate IIT entrance,’ Khuntia told IANS. ‘Let’s see, we have to work in that direction.’
‘As per the score of the entrance, selection will be made. Let’s say, the top rankers may go to IITs, the second bests will go to institutions which are a step below the IITs…so on,’ Khuntia elaborated. ‘The system will benefit the students most.’
After the meeting with school boards, Sibal said: ‘We will be working towards a single entrance examination in 2013. We are setting up a task force for that.’
Explaining the situation, the minister said there will be single entrance for each stream. For example, admission to all medical courses may take place through one entrance examination and all engineering admissions through another common entrance.
Sibal said the task force would decide how to go about it and look into issues like the weightage the Class 12 board examination result will have in the admission procedure.

This is not being done with any honest intentions. Until now the politicians are not able to get their hands on the iit seats for their relatives and friends because the system of jee is too solid and transparent so now they want to make it obscure and confusing to take advantage. Kids are not objects and one cannot standardize them. It is a stupid and insensitive idea to force ALL kids to do one type of exam.
The MHCET for example is far easier than the JEE, so then this new test will probably have to tread a middle path and make a watered down version of the JEE where it will be too easy for some and too tough for others.
Besides how can board exam marks be criteria for admission into iit? They differ from state to state in i)quality of teaching, ii)paper setting, iii)conducting of examinations and in the iv)correction pattern.
Besides board exams in several states and small towns is just a sham. Students regularly indulge in mass copying with the connivance of the school (several times the newspapers and channels have reported this), a)there is also instances of mark sheets being tampered with, b)answer sheets being replaced, c)invigilators being threatened into submission etc . Every alternate year the board papers (and last year even the AIEEE) in many states are leaked. So is the board exam marks a sound basis for admissions to the iits? Will such instances not increase if more benefits depended on these marks.
Many children have been preparing for these exams for the last four years what about their efforts? Can they not be allowed to write the Jee and any changes be brought in gradually before other younger kids start their preparations?
Besides if they are unable to plug the paper leak with just the AIEEE how will they ensure it now for an exam on such a huge scale? Also will it be conducted in regional languages too?
What about parents who will now put pressure on the kids to top the board exams AND the entrance tests? I thought the whole idea was to reduce stress.
Besides that, lacs of students get above 90% in their board exams, so on what basis will they be chosen to be admitted in the iits? Is this a backdoor entry then for those with influence and money?
The chap is trying to kill the dreams of thousands of children. Its not like only the kids with money to attend coaching classes are affected, it’s more those from poor families, for whom iit was the only ticket out of their situation It is the kids coached by places like the Super 30 who will suffer as they may never make it to the iits in this flawed system and they cannot afford the huge fees of other colleges.
I feel that change is required and is good for the future of students. but HRD ministry should think of having atleast 2 exams i.e first exam should include the 10+2 exam marks and the apptitude. the students who pass this exam are eligible to give a second exam comprising pure PCM or scientific aptitude questions based on PCM apps.
this i think will help to get students having better attitude and aptitude to enter the IITs.
what HRD minstry think is upto them???
For a student to be a good engineer he needs to be good in concepts & their applications to daily lives: JEE appropriately & completely tests that aptitude. Memory based exams like the XII boards correctly judges ones ability to be a good clerk. They should never be mixed. International science & maths olympiads are represented by IITians & they win Medals. Has XII Board toppers ever represented INDIA & won these ? NEVER. Someone in Delhi is fulfilling the hidden agenda of foreign universities who want to set up shops in INDIA, many relevant bills will soon be introduced in the Parliament. What is surprising is the IIT administration (JEE council) is toeing their line WHY ?
