How to Clear IIT JEE ?
IITBANDAI have been thinking to write an article on IIT JEE for past several months , finally i conceded to the demands of the Great IITBANDA Editorial Team .
In this article i will be focussing on certain areas related to IIT JEE :
- What is big about IIT JEE ?
- Preparation Plan for IIT JEE
- Resources for Preparation
- Who are real IITians ?
- What Next if not IIT ?
What is big about IIT JEE ?
IIT JEE is a Entrance Examination jointly conducted by all the IITs(Indian Institution of Technologies) for various courses like Btech , Integrated Mtech , Integrated Msc , dual degree , etc . For more information on IIT JEE and its Syllabus check this blog post aboutIIT JEE . In this article we will discuss how IIT JEE is different and why students all over India are crazy about this .There are many reasons why IIT JEE is highly rated and touted to be the most toughest examinations in the world at 12 th level.
Why IIT JEE has become so popular ? : IITs are the one of the coolest place not only to study but also to hoan your skills in many other facets of life . The Environment at IITs will make you shock proof , mentally strong and will foster confidence which often differentiate a normal graduate and a IITians Graduate . The facilities at IITs are awesome not only in terms of Infrastructure but also in terms of Placements and endless opportunities .
Due to these facilities , Media have spread the Brand IITians ..and it feels like a great warrior once you clear IIT JEE . In the answer to my 5 th Question , i will show the other facets also. Moreover India being a highly populous country makes the competition even more tough . There are also some other perceptions on why parents force their wards to clear IIT JEE . Some of the experiences of my talk with many parents are :
(a) clearing IIT JEE is to gain recognition in the society .If you belong to lowe middle class , then it is often thought that clearing IITs /IAS is the only way to rise from here .
(b) High Salary : Usually Students from IITs get hefty Salary package and it makes the IIT JEE all more attractive .
So lets now get into how to prepare for IIT JEE .
Preparation Plan for IIT JEE ?
Well i will discuss Preparation plan for IIT JEE for two categories of students :
(a) For students in Class XI
(b) For pass out Students
Lets first chalk out a strategy for students who will enter into class XI .See two years is enough for JEE Preparation , even if you do not join any coaching Institutes . Students who give IIT JEE in Current attempt have more chance to clear IIT JEE .This is because of two facts :
1. Current attempt students are in tune of their preparation , they are without tensions
2. Syllabus of IIT JEE is now similar to CBSE Boards ..
But current attempt students have an arduous task of maintaining their academic with JEE Preparation .. ..Buts lets see to overcome this. We will first start with Physics
CBSE Syllabus of Physics
| Class XI | Class XII |
| Physical World & Measurement | Electrostatics |
| Kinematics | Current Electricity |
| Laws of Motion | Magnetic effect of current & Magnetism |
| Work , Energy & Power | Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Current |
| Motion of System of Particles & Rigid Body | Electromagnetic Waves |
| Gravitation | Optics |
| Properties of Bulk Matter | Dual Nature of Matter |
| Thermodynamics | Atoms & Nuclei |
| Behaviour of Perfect Gas & Kinetic Theory of Gases | Electronic Waves |
| Oscillation & Waves | Communication Systems |
Out of the above CBSE Syllabus ,Communication Systems is not included in the IIT JEE Syllabus . So we will chalk out a plan which will not only help to clear IIT JEE but also score well in your class XI.Before that we will compare the other two subjects syllabus.
CBSE Syllabus of Chemistry
| Class XI | Class XII |
| Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry | Solid State |
| Structure of Atom | Solutions |
| Classification of Elements and periodicity in Properties | Electrochemistry |
| Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure | Chemical Kinetics |
| States of Matter : Gases & Liquids | Surface Chemistry |
| Thermodynamics | General principles and processes of Isolation of Elements |
| Equilibrium | p-Block Elements |
| Redox Reactions | d- and f-Block Elements |
| Hydrogen | Coordination Compounds |
| S-Block Elements | Haloalkanes and Haloarenes |
| Some P-Block Elements | Alcohols,Phenols & Ethers |
| Organic Chemistry :some basic Principles and Techniques | Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen |
| Hydrocarbons | Bio molecules |
| Environmental Chemistry | Polymers |
| Chemistry in Everyday Life | |
| Aldehydes,Ketones and Carboxylic acids |
Almost everything matches between JEE & CBSE . So you do not have to worry about board ..if you are ready with JEE , you are certain to score more than 90 % in JEE .
CBSE Syllabus of Maths
| Class XI | Class XII |
| Sets and Functions | Relations & Functions |
| Algebra | Algebra( Matrices & Determinants) |
| Coordinate Geometry | Vectors & 3-D |
| Calculus | Continuity, Differentiability,Application of Derivatives , Integrals ,Application of Integrals , Differential Equations |
| Mathematical Reasoning | Linear Programming |
| Statistics & Probability | Probability |
When you look into the syllabus of JEE topics which are outside JEE range are :
(a) Mathematical Reasoning (b) Linear Programming
Now Here is the winning Plan for Current attempt Students Who do not want to take coaching :
| After Board – 10 th April | After taking Board Exams , take rest for 7-8 days ,watch some movies and enjoy with your friends. |
| From 11 th April – 10 th July | Stress on Physics . Do not touch any other subjects even though many of your friends might be studying many coaching Institutes . DO not get disturbed by this .Try to cover entire mechanics within this period as Physics requires time to grasp concepts .So this is the ideal time to finish mechanics part |
| From 11 th July – 15 December | Stress on Maths & Chemistry .Finish the following sections in Chemistry in the order (a) GASES (b)Thermodynamics (c ) Equilibrium Bulk of the Questions in JEE are asked from this . Finishing Bonding will just take a week . You have to atleast devote 5-6 hours each day apart from regular classes. Try to solve problems in schools also. try to cover the topics that are done in schools from JEE Perspective In mathematics , start with |
| From 16 th December – 15 the Feb | Start with Thermodynamics in Physics + and in between also read Chemical Bonding when you get bored from Physics . After this you can you should try to cover probability |
The things mentioned above has to be done from JEE point of view . Certain things has to be cleared for class XI Board which you have to adjust in between this . This is tough but you have to think that you are not alone in this race .But guys who maintain character and determination are eventually true IITians ..
| From 1 st April (class XII) – 1 st may | Start full fledged on Calculus ..Finish Integral +Differential Calculus in 1 month .Leave Differential Calculus .. |
| Summer Vacations | This is the time where you have to Finish Electrostatics + Organic Chemistry |
| After Summer Vacations – Christmas Leave | Finish the easier topics of Physics like Optics , waves + Chemical Kinetics + Solutions + 3 D + matrices & Determinants |
| After Christmas vacation – 1 st Feb | Stress on Inorganic Chemistry + Biochemistry + Modern Physics + give some tests to practice |
Resources for Preparations( Do not read any other books or any other materials if you are preparing yourself ..Do not get bogged down by so many books available in the market )
(a) Physics :
1. Mechanics : For mechanics read theory from Theory of Mechanics , I.E. Irodov ( No other book is required ) and solve problems from H.C. Verma . No need to look in Problems in Mechanics by I.E. Irodov ..Examples in the theory book is enough for JEE
2. Electro stats : Read theory from Theory of Electromagnetism by I.E. Irodov and solve problems from H.C. Verma . I mean each & every questions . No need to look into any other books
3. Wave & Optics : Read theory from Resnick Halliday books and solve problems from H.C.Verma . No need to look into any other notes & books . You can look into the IITBANDA Posts.
4. Modern Physics : Read theory and solve problems from H.C. Verma Part 2 . Do not touch any other books
5. General part : look into the lab manual and read each experiment and understand everything from there . for solving problems on this you can look into the IITBanda Post ..we will be shortly publishing an article on this covering each & everything.
(b) Maths :
1. Algebra : Till now in the market Arihant leads ..Read theory & practice from Arihant Algebra ..No need to browse any stuffs ..If want to see some innovations that has been done with Algebra ..you can browse the notes of ABC CLASSES ..i have seen they have really done innovation with algebra ..
2. Co-ordinate Geometry : Just buy S.L. Loney Co-ordinate book and buy its solutions from the market ..try to solve the problems on yours ..if you do not get it ..see the solutions . JEE Questions cannot be out of range of S.L. Loney CO-ordinate Books. I bet on this
3. Calculus : Buy Arihant book solve each & evry questions .Maths is all about tricks ..
4. Vector , 3-D : Same Arihant books
(c ) Chemistry :
1. chemical Equilibrium + Ionic Equilibrium + Solutions + Chemical Kinetics : Read theory from University Chemistry from Bruce .H. mahan ..Plz do not read theory from any other books .It will be waste of time . And for numericals solve it from Arihant Physical Chemistry but try to apply the concepts read from Bruce.H.Mahan into the numericals because solutions in the Arihant books is not standard.
2. Gas + Chemical Bonding : Read it from Physical Chemistry book of Arun Bahl & G.D. Tuli ..For numericals you can again refer Arihant
3. Co-ordination Compounds + Solid state : J.D. Lee Inorganic Chemistry is unparalleled
4. Organic Chemistry : Just buy book of Solomons & its Solutions manual .You need require any other books or practice books .Arihant books sucks in organics ..many mistakes in the approach ..
Now Answer to 3 rd Questions : Who are real IITians ?
Real IITians are those who have got concepts and can solve a mechanics problem even after their Btech ..yes physics is all about concepts and these should be in mind for ever atleast Mechanics ..and i will bet 50 % of 4 th year Btech IITs can’t solve a basic Mechanics problem .they have forgotten the very basics ..But Those 50 % who have focussed on concepts are brewing with confidence .So do not study with just mission of Cracking JEE ,study with passion of learning concepts .According to me , students who have not cleared JEE but have got solid concepts ,they leave many IITians behind in the career .
What Next if not IIT JEE ?
One thing is very clear competitions in JEE is very tough many students get same marks .So students who narrowly miss JEE should not get disheartened . Life is a war and there are many battles in this war. What if you have got one setback ..and Clearing JEE should not be the goals it should just an aim .You can clear AIEEE , BITSAT all of them are equivalent .What matters is your Concepts .
P.S. : Even though i am a faculty member of ABC CLASSES . i have written this article from a transparent positions . ABC Classes is different than other as we advocate the mission of our company TRAJECTORY EDUCATION to FOSTER CONCEPTS

I have given CBSE 10th Board just now.
I want to crack IIT and hold position in top 100 without joining any coaching running for the preparation of IIT.
However I would join some home tuition.
Would be I able to do so?
What should be my further planning?
Morever,I started studing maths and physics but had strongly felt that to clear the concept of physics,I must have the whole knowledge of maths given in syllabus of xi.
What should I do?
Should I firstly complete my maths, then study physics
or
continue both the subjects at the same time?
Kindly help me!!!!!!!!
hey aditi, maths is base of all subjects so just do easily and in cool way dont get distracted to do this or that just focus on one subject one each day ,as u r plannning to get under 100 rank so just work hard and make ur planner so that u can plan out what to do on each day.
and dont waste ur time just get into the coarse without thinking about outcome.
for coaaching i prefer ’100 percentile.com’ its online testing.
Hello Aditi ,
Dedinately it can be done .
Look at the following strategy :
1. Read some basic chapters of differentiation & limits ..very basic concept , you can pick NCERT books for it . After you have read the basic books , start with physics ..because it takes time to make concepts . Finish at least the whole mecahnics part during your summer vaccation and some topics of algenra of class XII th part .
There is absolutely no need of coaching if you can mantain discipiline & concentration yourself . For any queries , you can post to iitbanda forums .
Hello,
This is ADITI again.
I have asked earlier too that I’m not able to clear the concept of physics as it contains a lot of utilisation of maths of xi class.
So, should I firstly complete my maths then study physics
or
continue both the subjects at the same time.
Kindly give me your valuable suggestion!!!!!!
THANKS A LOT:-)
Hey Aditi ,
Welcome back ..
See read the basics & formulae from a basic books . rest you will be able to deal with the problems ,, once you see some solved examples .
Well aditi , if you want to study on your own. you will have to labour hard . Start with the physics , take the book resnick halliday and solve the problems from the H.C. Verma books . you can definately see the solutions from the book .
For any problem while studying , you can definately post your query in the IITBanda Forum
i have a doubt in selecting my book for each subject… pls help me…i will give the list of books that i have with me…

pls help me in choosing my books…. i will be doing bt and fiitjee material alongwith the books that you suggest for me…. thank you
hi kishore here again…
i missed out a few details…
i also have j d lee for inorganic chemistry….
i started preparing for iit jee only from april 2010 coz i was fooling myself that the books i had were not enough in my 11th…. i am sure i can catch up if you can suggest me the good books to follow….
pls tell me for each subject and section ffor each subject what books i must follow…. like the same way you have written in this article…
thank you
hi kishore here again…
wat book should i use from the list i have given for the following titles…
physical chemistry (especially stoichiometry)
inorganic chemistry
organic chemistry
algebra
trigonometry
coordinate geometry
calculus
vectors and 3d
mechanics
waves
thermodynamics
electricity and magnetism
optics
modern physics
i dunno if i have left out any of the sections
pls suggest the required books….. i wont mind if i have to buy any new books…… pls help me choose my books…. pls….
here are the list of gud books :
1. Physical — university chemistry by bruce mahan for theory & Arihant for numerical
2. organic — take solomons book
3. Inorganic — refer your ncert book
4.mathematics — refer arihant .. but for co-ordinate : use S.L. Loney and its solution book (No questions in jee would be asked out of this range ..i bet
5. For Physics , use only H.C. Verma ..no other book required ..For theory you may refer Resnick halliday & University Physics … But the greatest book is yet to be released ..its soon coming to the market specially for mechanics .
i m raghav.i m in 12th.i ll give the jee in approx 9.5 months.i have not really studied much in class 11th but everyone tells me that i can do it if i study hard fer the next 9 months.so i just want some suggestions from you. can i clear jee if i study seriously fer the next 9 months.
definately raghav you can surely crack jeee if you properly plan your study now . Start focussing on your part 11 daily wise.. if you have any specific subject replated problems . Post on the forum

i’m doing engineering in UPTU colleges.I want to crack IIT-JEE 2011
Please tell me some tips to get through IITjee
Very useful for iit jee students. Great post .
Hello, I am in deep trouble , i have joined this iit coaching centre in hyderabad Ramaiah. But now since i had lost lot of days there i can’t understand anything and they won’t help catch up… so i try abd try but can’t so i think i must self study but its halfway september and i am appearing for iit next year in 12th what must i do….plz giv advice!!!!!!!!
Thanks
dont worry dude just make a list of ur trouble in a particular chapter and then take time from ur respective teacher to teach me that topic and dont hassitate to ask and fight for ur problems
I have passed +2 science this year with 76% in phy, chem and math.I am so much interested for IIT-JEE 2011.sometimes i fell that the time is too late now.please kindly guide me.
Hi friends,i am Ashis from Puri, have passed +2 science this year 2010.i am so much interested for IIT-JEE 2011.But economic of my family is very poor.my family suggested me to take addimission in Bsc.But i cann’t so with givving cobber to my passion.so i am going to suiside on 25th oct. Hello,I am in class 11 now and study in an ISC school. I want to get into IIT,and pass the competitive IIT JEE exam. And gain a top rank.
I have not yet started preparing for it, but can you please help me plan my schedule out? how do I prepare for this exam with the time I have(19 months approximately). I am not going to any coaching centers, but I do go for normal physics, chemistry, mathematics tuition for ISC standards. How much time should I spend for each subject approximately per day/week?
Kindly reply to my query as early as possible.
Thank you.
Sir? can you please reply?
i`m in class 11th n till now ,due to some reasons i cudn`t start with jee preparation .but i`m really dedicated for it n really want 2 get among d top rankers of jee.so, i want to know if there ,actually, exists any hope for me ,as all my frnds who`re preparing for jee have completed 70%of the whole course.i can devote upto 6-7 hrs for my self-study.n i`m quick at grasping things, this is what my teachers say! if so, then please suggest me a suitable track with what all buks i must complete by this year,or if ncert is all what i must do this year,as nxt year i`ll be joining a coaching instt.please sir ,please guide me the best way i can have! i`ll religiously follow the track u`ll show!n i`ll be really very very thankful!!!!!!!please do help me.
Dear Subhangi , do not get disappointed . IIT JEE is not that tough as advertised by all coaching institute . If you can devote 6 hours of self study from now . ITs enough .
Follow this strategy :
1. Since you are in class XI , try to cover the numericals from H.C. Verma of the part that you have studied from NCERT . Its enough , you do not need to look any other numerical book for physics.
2. For maths : for co-ordinate , buy the solution books of S.L. loney and try to practice from it . Theory you must have covered from NCERT . the same goes trignometory. for algebra , buy any book among arihant or k.C. Sinha.
3. For chemistry , theory from NCERT is good enough . try to solve numericals from R.K. Mukherjee Numerical book .
In class XII , join any all india test series but analyse the results of test series in positive way .
See if there is a gud guidance , you need not require coaching ..right you know yourseld and your potential , do not get distracted by others .
Enjoy Preparation
sir please reply………..
thanx a lot sir! i`ll do as u`ve said
hi nw i m going to be in class 12th and nw i m to take coaching for iit jee preoairation i have a good base of physics maths and chemistry of 11th .
my ouestion is that should i take coaching nw or i should drop a year and take coaching after 12th so that i can acheive a really good rank in iit jee
plzzzzzzz reply fast and tell hw should i study nw for iit jee
