Unravelling the secrets of IIT JEE

Unravelling the secrets of IIT JEE

With the population increasing day by day and jobs increasing at snail’s pace, we need entrance exams. They are not the luxury but necessity in these times of recession when we need to cream out the talent who can drive our industries in a better way in comparison to others. We need to identify those talents and hone their skills according to the need of the industry they show their interest in. And this is being done by various entrance exams and engineering entrance exams are no exception to this.

Every year millions of students appear for engineering entrance exams and very few of them clear them or say are lucky enough to get a seat of their choice in the prestigious colleges. In this way you can imagine yourself how hard is the competition becoming day by day. Every parent wants his son or daughter to be part of that mad rat race and emerge out successful. And to see that happening they put their wards through expensive coaching classes .Some of the students are lucky to have their Keith & kin into IITs. But many of them are inexperienced like every other students appearing for the exam. So they need to be trained for those rigorous exams. And for those students who lack any of the facility and information i decided to contribute this article for IIT CORNER. Here is a quick insight into the pattern of various engineering entrance exams and suggestions on how to prepare for those exams. These things have helped my past students very much and I hope they will help you equally.

This series of articles will take you to the world of entrance exams comprising IITJEE, AIEEE, CEE (DCE-NSIT), WBJEE and many others like CEE (IPU).

Many of you will say that to prepare for the entrance exams like other exams we only need to study the topics that are in the syllabus and nothing else but that’s correct up to some extent only. Because there is much competition these days so everybody need to be aware of the pattern as well along with the syllabus of the exam.

So this article will present you the pattern of exams with the syllabus that students need to study. I am starting with the most prestigious entrance exam in the world : IIT JEE

The complexity of the IIT JEE arises from the fact that the questions are always unique in their context, and solving them often requires a combination of concepts from across the different chapters. Nevertheless, some basic data analysis can be quite revealing and could give some important insights into how one should go about preparing for each subject. Such analysis forms the basis of our understanding of the JEE.

Changing pattern of the IIT JEE is nothing new; recent years have experienced many such changes. The JEE 2006 brought a new pattern. However, the JEE 2007 will be regarded as a milestone for more than one reason. This was the first JEE that had two stages (papers)—both of which were objective in nature. In JEE 2008, Multiple options correct questions were included that were absent in JEE 2007.

Iitjee – physics

Physics is more of conceptual than the rote, so everybody should prepare it by actually going through the practical examples. It will help you in remembering the concepts for a long time. Like chemistry it is also scoring but here you have to have sound concepts as well.

In JEE 2007, in Physics, there were minor shifts in the usual distribution of marks and questions. Mechanics reigned supreme with 34%, Electricity and Magnetism saw their share go down to 20%. Optics had a sizeable contribution of 14%, followed by Modern Physics at 11%. The remaining topics covered about 21%.

Similarly, in 2008, questions were almost uniformly distributed among all areas other than Electrostatics, EMI and AC. Mechanics stood out again with 44%, Electricity and Magnetism contributed to about 20%, Optics went to a below of 9% followed by Modern Physics at 13% (increased this year). The remaining topics covered about 14%.

In 2009, mechanics contributed 39%.electricity and magnetism stood at 23%, modern physics increased its share to 18%.modern physics was at 12%, thermodynamics contributed 7%.

IITJEE – Chemistry

Having discussed physics in detail we can now move on to the most crucial part of the engineering preparation, which is chemistry. Many students lack in the preparation of the chemistry that’s why they remain in last of the ranks in exams. This is the subject which needs more preparation relative to other subjects. But at the same time it is easier to score in chemistry. Having understood a concept in chemistry there is no reason that you can’t do any question of that concept.

It needs only some amount of initial input thereafter the output in chemistry is very high. You can score very well in this subject that too saving much of your crucial time. This is not the case with other subjects like physics and mathematics as there are more concepts than number of questions. And each and every concept you have to fathom very well. If anywhere your concept falters then there are many chances of your question going for negative marking rather than a four.

Some of the topics that featured more in papers were Electrochemistry, Bonding, p-block Elements and general Organic Chemistry. General influence found in topics: p-block Elements, Transition Elements and Co-ordination Compounds, General Organic Chemistry and States of Matter.

In 2008, Questions were almost uniformly distributed among all areas other than noticeable share of 40% while contribution of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry were about 35% and 25%, respectively.

In 2009, questions were again almost uniformly distributed among with physical at 41%, organic at 33% and inorganic at 26%

In JEE 2007, in Mathematics, the maximum contribution came from Calculus 28% as usual, followed by Algebra and Coordinate Geometry. One notable feature in Mathematics was that its increased weightage of Coordinate Geometry. Trigonometry, Vectors and 3D-Geometry were minor contributors at 1 0% each.

In JEE 2008 Mathematics, Calculus contributed 23%, Coordinate Geometry with 21% and Algebra at 2%. Remaining topics covered about 34% in both 2007-2008 papers.

In JEE-2009, algebra stood at 35%, calculus contributed 32%, and Trigonometry was at 13%.

Topic wise distribution as provided in previous section was necessary for the students who are currently studying their 12th class as they can make by choosing the topics which match their 12th syllabus and IITJEE syllabus as well. They can maximize their score in CBSE exams by choosing the topics which are scoring as well as are also in IITJEE.

Here we have tried to keep our distribution area specific. Physics is divided into 5 areas and all of them vary in their difficulty level of questions that come and difficulty level of concepts to understand. Every year almost equal number of questions comes from that particular area. So you need yourselves to be informed of those facts and figures to keep yourself prepared for that pattern.

There was sure effort from your side, but not in the right direction imho. These statistics reveal only on the number of questions which only gives a faint clue to the whole picture. Choosing marks as the measure would have proved more useful. Nevertheless good job.
